A lot of people still argue to this day that human behaviour can not be affected by colors. I is scientifically proven that not only is it affected by colours but it can also be manipulated by colors.
Ever wondered why all the CAUTION signs are in yellow or why all the WARNING/DANGER signs are in red? The answer is that humans respond accordingly to those colors.
What is Color?
Color is just light, with different frequencies in their wave lengths. And you can do a lot of amazing things with waves, so frankly it applies to color as well. Believe it or not, all kinds of waves (sonic wave, subsonic wave, light wave) have surprising effects on human. Since graphic design is all about visuals and colors, it is important to know what color has what effect.
Effects/Meaning of Different Colors:
Red: Red is associated with energy, war, danger, strength, power, determination as well as passion, desire, and love. It’s scientifically proven that pure red scientifically enhances human metabolism, increases respiration rate, and raises blood pressure. It attracts attention more than any other color, that’s why it’s always used in WARNING/DANGER signs.
Blue: Blue is a color that suggests peace. It’s the color of the calm sea and the clear sky, both of which are linked to inner serenity, calm and clarity. Blue was also shown to slow heart rate and breathing, so it can be a good color to aid in meditation or relaxation. Light blue is the color most linked to creativity. Sky blue is the most calming shade of blue that helps a person relax. Sky blue is also a color that inspires safety and serenity. Dark blue is the shade that is associated with intelligence and lack of emotion.
Yellow: Yellow is the brightest color of the visible spectrum, and it is the most noticeable of all colors by the human eye. It means happiness and optimism; it is the color of sun shining, or bright light and creativity. Perhaps you remember the picture with the bright yellow light bulb above someone’s head when a good idea pops out. It means that yellow can unclog the thinking process, helping us become more creative, even in finding logical solutions.
Black: Associated with power, elegance, formality, death, evil, and mystery. A mysterious colour associated with fear and the unknown, black usually has a negative connotation. But because it stands for elegance and fits well with almost anything, it is widely used.
Of course there are many and many more colors available and they all have their effects on human but these are the primary colors. Every other color you see or ever will see originates from these colours. For example, mix blue with yellow and you’ll get green, mix red with blue and you’ll get purple. Using colors properly can manipulate how your customer acts towards your service.
This photo perfectly sums up how important colors are and how they affect consumers.
Using the right color can boost your design, just as using the wrong colour may cost you. Know your colors, know the objectives of your design. Experiment and let your ideas flow. Something good will come out.
